Crumbs of Wisdom

Wulfric of Creigull

The Anglo-Saxon word for a landowner (a man) is “hlaford”, meaning “man who gives out the bread”. The word for his wife is “hlæfdigge” (“kneader of the dough”). These became our modern words “lord” and “lady”. A term for servant, “hlafæta” means “loaf-eater”.
