Crumbs of Wisdom

Wulfric of Creigull

In the Anglo-Saxon manuscript known as Ælfric’s Colloquy, a baker is asked “can we live without you?” His response is “You may for a period of time, not for long, or very well. Indeed without my trade every table would seem empty, and without bread all food turns to loathing. I strengthen the heart of mean and am the strength of men. Even the little ones will not despise me.”
