Bakers were one of the most important medieval occupations, in that they fed villages more than any other profession ‑ bread formed a large part of the common diet. A medieval poet wrote that "Bakers support the world; and of all occupations are the most beloved; and the most beautiful and the nicest; And who do the most to take care of the poor... for this bakers will be saved in Paradise
