Griffinsguard – A Profile of an SCA Fighting Unit

By Lady Siobhan of Cloverdale

Chronicler's Comment: Some time ago, I asked Lady Siobhan to research a feature length article on Griffins Guard. She has produced a document based on direct observation and experience about what is generally recognized as the premiere fighting unit in the West Kingdom. Their history is tied to the ancient past of this region. It is fitting that we initiate our series of Feature Articles about service to the SCA by citing this "very special group."

Griffinsguard is a group of talented individuals who have shared what they do best (with mundanes and SCA'ers alike): fighting, diplomacy, the arts, armouring, and teaching. As the members of Griffinsguard are a "melting pot" from all over the kingdom, they felt that their loyalty was to the kingdom of the West, and the Principality of the Mists, and not to any one province or shire. They are excellent examples of service in the Society, through courtesy and chivalry they give us am anchor to the very thing that keeps us going - the dream.

Griffinsguard started as a group of friends hanging out together at events, but later developed into a personal household, in AS XV (1978). Lead by Sir Brandon d'Arundel their fighter practice focused on "War" skills and strategies, not just bashing. As the group grew in age and numbers, it evolved from a personal household, in AS XVIII (1981), into a mercenary company - Griffinsguard. This meant that only fighters could be members.

They have earned the respect and gratitude of several kings and princes for their support in wartime. They have traveled all over the west and to the east kingdom wars (Pennsics). The group holds several citations or "ribbons' from various royalty. For his leadership of Griffinsguard, Sir Brandon holds the title of Knight Bannerette (a kingdom war leadership award), The Order of Valor (given for excellence and service to the kingdom in war) and the Corolla Murallis ( a Principality of the Mists award).

Southern Shores is fortunate to have the majority of the members of Griffinsguard residing within our borders. They have fought with and for us repeatedly in past years. We want them to know that they are very appreciated here in Southern Shores for being who and what they are.
