Photography in the SCA

by Mistress Jania of Call Duck Manor

Many events that happen in the SCA are momentary and while you may remember what happened, it can be difficult to share with friends. With a photograph, you can almost show them what happened.

Newcomers have asked me the following question, "Is it all right if I take pictures?" My instant response is, "Sure, but ... "

This is often too quick an answer and realizing that there is no Renaissance equivalent for the flash bulb and the camera, I would like to express my views on the subject.

There are some basic guidelines for the period photographer

First: Try to be unobtrusive.

Second: Always ask permission if you must step briefly in front of others. The telephoto lens helps enormously.

But let us say you arrive at an indoor event where court is being held and will need to use your flash. If I were to visit another area and didn't know if they might have any restrictions on the use of flash equipment, I would ask the Court Herald. This is the person (usually in green with gold trumpets) who asks for those who have business for court to come talk to him. These people are usually well acquainted with the reigning royalty and would answer you, or if they are uncertain, would be able to get the answer. This avoids your problem of approaching the Excellencies, when you don't know the protocol. (I have never run into a no flash situation, but I have not visited other Kingdoms.)

Let me tell you of my experiences with photographs. Recently, I found 22 photos taken by my Lord at the Investiture when Stephen of Beckingham claimed the Coronet of the Principality of Cynagua when he meant to claim the Mists coronet. When these were presented to the Their Excellencies, Stephen and Saria, what chuckles unfolded as they reviewed the various moments with their friends around the table, of that event with the photos.

There is no easier way to explain to a newcomer something about the Society and how we like to dress than by pulling out an album full of pictures. Like the wedding photographer, you can capture a friend's moments at court if you have a camera. If you are going to be called to court, tell a friend so that they can record your special time. My Lord was, asked by a past Prince and Princess to be their official photographer during their reign. At the end of their reign, he presented them with an album containing about 10 rolls of pictures placed in chronological order which had been taken during the previous six months. Captured forever was the gopher who came to court and the chocolate bird made by Cynagua which helped promote the Mists-Cynagua war.

I took pictures of a Knighting and gave copies to the gentleman. I have found that almost everyone likes pictures of themselves if they are taken unaware. I have never failed to receive thanks and appreciations for photographs I have presented. Wouldn't a delightful Twelfth Night present be a collection of candid shots of a friend taken in the previous year? So if you want to take pictures, please do, and remember to get a second set so you can share those famous moments with the subjects.
