Pole Carriers

by Meredith of Schramberg

Many people have told me how nice my pole carriers are. They tame a large bundle of poles and still make them portable. The idea is that the bag at the end of the poles holds the pole together; and the strap in the middle is not long enough for the bags to come off the ends (until you want them to). My pavilion has sixteen 6 1/2 foot poles and eleven five foot poles. All made from 3/4 inch EMT conduit. I made three pairs of pole carriers: all of the five foot poles fit into one pair, and the 6 1/2 foot poles fit in the other two in two sets of eight. The things needed to make them are:

four pairs of Fastex®
thirty feet of webbing
1/2yard of 60 inch wide canvas, or one yard of 45 inch wide canvas

Cut four 14"x16" rectangles from the fabric.

Cut two pieces of webbing to longer than the longest of the poles that will be used in each carrier. I suggest that you put poles all the same length in one carrier it prevents fallout.

With a lighter or candle, bum the end of the webbing so that it no longer frays. Do not use fray check it turns the webbing gooey. Bum the ends of each piece of webbing after you cut it. If it is set aside and not burned, it will be a big mess of fluffy thread.

Fold each of the rectangles in half, and sew along two connecting sides. If they are folded the long way, a wider carrier will result, and more poles can be carried. If they are folded along the short side, a narrower carrier will develop this is better for very long poles.

Turn the bag inside out and sew along the two sides. (This is a French seam. It is nice because if the seam tears, there is another to hold it until you can fix it.)

Fold the top edge over twice and sew it down. Do this to all four rectangles.

When this is finished, take the leftover webbing, and cut it into fourths. One of the fourths is sewn to each of the four bags.

This is where the Fastex® comes in. Put one half of each of the Fastex® on each of the ends of the short webbing pieces and sew the webbing back onto itself

Then sew the middle four inches of the webbing onto the bag. Sew a large X with a box around it, and double stitch at the ends.

Once this is done on two bags, take one long piece of webbing. Fold the ends back by six inches and sew them down to themselves. These loops will go around the ends of the webbing with the Fastex® on them.

Now your pole carriers are complete!
